About State Game Lands 57

Pennsylvania State Game Lands 57 (SGL 57) encompasses approximately 20,000 acres in Potter County, situated in the heart of the Allegheny Plateau. This area features a mix of dense hardwood forests, open meadows, streams, and rolling hills with elevations ranging from roughly 1,700 to 2,200 feet. It is managed by the Pennsylvania Game Commission primarily for wildlife conservation and public hunting, providing habitat for a variety of species including white-tailed deer, black bear, wild turkey, grouse, and numerous small mammals and songbirds. The region’s remote and rugged terrain is extensively forested, with species such as oak, maple, cherry, and hemlock prevalent in the canopy. The area also includes several streams that contribute to local watersheds and support native brook trout populations. Historically, the land was once logged extensively but has since been allowed to revert to a mature forest ecosystem. Outdoor recreationists value SGL 57 for its hunting opportunities, especially during deer and bear seasons, as well as for hiking and wildlife viewing. There are no large developed facilities, which preserves the wilderness-like experience. Visitors appreciate the abundance of game, solitude, and the chance to explore less-trafficked forest trails. Although trails are not heavily developed or marked compared to state parks, the slender network of old logging roads and paths offers challenging routes for hikers and hunters. The area is an excellent destination for those seeking to connect with Pennsylvania’s remote forested landscapes.
